Road Map Step 4: I Understand

Understanding happens when you see the pattern.

Step 4: I UNDERSTAND

aka The Part Where the Fog Finally Lifts

There comes a moment in this journey where things don’t necessarily get easier — but they finally start making sense.
You’re not just reacting, spiraling, over-giving, people-pleasing, shutting down.
You’re finally able to name it.

“Ohhhh, that’s why I freeze up when someone raises their voice.”

“That’s why I say yes even when I’m screaming no on the inside.”

When you can name your patterns, they lose their mystery.
And with that — their power.

This is the phase where I realised:

My patterns weren’t random.
They were survival strategies.
That wall I built? It used to be my shelter.
The silence I used as armour? It once kept me safe.

But here’s the beautiful thing:
I’m not that scared version of me anymore.
And now that I understand where these habits came from — I get to choose differently.

Try this:

Catch one old habit today — a little one.
The knee-jerk “Sure, I’ll help!”
The instant shutdown when you feel criticised.
The urge to scroll your soul away.

Name it.
Thank it for its service.
Then rewrite its job description.

Mine?
“Hey People Pleaser — thanks for helping me survive boarding school.
I’m promoting you to Boundary Boss. We’re doing things differently now.”
